March 25, 2026—America’s Communications Association (ACA Connects) released the following statement after the Supreme Court unanimously ruled that Cox Communications Inc. should not be held liable when its subscribers commit online music piracy.
“This is a major victory for broadband connectivity in the United States,” said Grant Spellmeyer, President and CEO of America’s Communications Association. “ACA Connects is pleased that the Supreme Court unanimously rejected a deeply flawed theory of copyright liability that would have threatened access to open, affordable, and reliable internet service that hundreds of millions of Americans depend on every day.”
Note: ACA Connects joined an amicus brief in September 2025, led by the Common Sense Copyright Coalition, urging the Supreme Court to reverse the Fourth Circuit Court’s decision in Cox Communications, Inc. v. Sony Music Entertainment. In the brief, ACA Connects and other ISP trade associations urged the Supreme Court to bring clarity and common sense to copyright liability and protect the internet as we know it.

America’s Communications Association (ACA Connects) is a trade organization representing approximately 500 small and medium-sized, independent companies that provide high-speed internet, video, phone, and mobile services covering 29 million households. ACA Connects members operate in every state, providing advanced communications to connect homes, companies, main street, schools, hospitals and more. America’s economic prosperity in smaller communities and rural areas depends on the growth and success of independent operators, who believe a connected nation is a prosperous nation.
