September 5, 2025—America’s Communications Association (ACA Connects) joined an amicus brief, led by the Common Sense Copyright Coalition, urging the Supreme Court to reverse the Fourth Circuit Court’s decision in Cox Communications, Inc. v. Sony Music Entertainment.
In the brief, ACA Connects and other ISP trade associations write that the Fourth Circuit’s decision is “burdensome, unworkable, and inconsistent with Congressional intent.” If the erroneous reading of the Copyright Act is permitted to stand, it would “actively undermine decades of progress in getting Americans everywhere connected to the Internet.”
Grant Spellmeyer, President and CEO of America’s Communications Association, released the following statement underscoring the importance of this brief and the opportunity for the Court to address legal overreach on music copyright infringement.
“ACA Connects is proud to join this broad coalition urging the Supreme Court to bring clarity and common sense to copyright liability, keep people connected to high-speed internet, and protect the internet as we know it. The time has come to strike down judicial overreach that is jeopardizing internet access for the hundreds of millions of Americans that broadband providers serve.”
